How Daycare Sanitization Programs Work — and What to Look For
Daycare and preschool cleaning is not standard commercial cleaning with smaller furniture. It is a categorically different program — one that must account for child safety, regulatory requirements, parent expectations, and the biological reality that young children spread illness at extraordinary rates.
If you operate a licensed childcare facility in California, here is what a proper sanitization program looks like and how to evaluate whether your current vendor is actually meeting the standard.
The California Licensing Standard for Daycare Cleaning
California Community Care Licensing Division (CCLD) regulations require licensed childcare facilities to maintain cleanliness and sanitation throughout all areas used by children. Specifically:
- All surfaces children come into contact with must be cleaned and sanitized daily
- Restrooms must be cleaned and sanitized at least once per day and more frequently as needed
- Diaper changing areas must be sanitized after each use
- Toys and manipulatives that go in children's mouths must be sanitized daily
- Food preparation and eating surfaces must be sanitized before and after each use
These are minimums. A professional cleaning program should exceed them.
Product Safety — The Non-Negotiable Starting Point
The first question to ask any cleaning vendor serving a daycare: what products do you use, and are they safe for children?
Many commercial disinfectants that are highly effective in adult environments — quaternary ammonium compounds, bleach-based products at high concentrations, phenolic disinfectants — can be harmful to children, especially infants and toddlers who spend time on floors and put surfaces in their mouths.
A proper daycare cleaning program uses:
- EPA-registered, child-safe disinfectants — Products on EPA List N that are effective against target pathogens but formulated for low toxicity in child environments
- Fragrance-free or low-VOC products — Children with asthma or sensitivities react to strong fragrances and chemical off-gassing
- Appropriate dwell times — Disinfectants must remain on surfaces long enough to be effective, then be properly wiped or allowed to dry before children return
Zone-by-Zone Sanitization Protocols
Classrooms and Play Areas
- All furniture surfaces (tables, chairs, shelves) disinfected daily
- Floor mopping with appropriate disinfectant solution — paying special attention to crawl areas and play mats
- Door handles, light switches, and cubbies disinfected daily
- Shared manipulatives, blocks, and educational toys sanitized daily or rotated through a sanitization cycle
Restrooms and Diaper Areas
- Full disinfection of toilets, sinks, counters, and floors — minimum once daily, more frequently based on occupancy
- Diaper changing stations sanitized after each use during operating hours; full disinfection nightly
- Proper waste disposal protocols for soiled materials
Nap and Rest Areas
- Cots, mats, and rest surfaces sanitized between each child's use and thoroughly after each nap cycle
- Bedding laundered or sanitized per licensing requirements
What parents actually notice: Smell and visible cleanliness at drop-off. A daycare that smells clean and has visibly sanitized surfaces communicates safety before a parent reads any policy document. This perception directly affects enrollment decisions.
What Separates a Good Daycare Cleaning Vendor From a Generic One
- They can name the specific products they use and explain why those products are appropriate for a childcare environment.
- They understand dwell time protocols — applying disinfectant and immediately wiping it off is not disinfection.
- They have a consistent team assigned to your facility who learn the specific layout and requirements, rather than rotating staff unfamiliar with your program.
- They clean after-hours so products fully dry and off-gas before children arrive in the morning.
- They provide documentation of completed cleaning tasks that you can produce during CCLD inspections.
